Legendary Troy... Inhabited since 3000 BC, there are 9 layers—versions—of Troy through the centuries of its existence. The city of Troy, located today near the modern city of Canakkale, was perched atop a hill overlooking the Aegean Sea and was the scene of the famous Trojan War, the first multinational war. Legend tells how Paris, Prince of Troy stole Helen, the most beautiful woman in all the known world, away from her Greek husband, King Menelaus. Enraged, the Greeks united and set sail for Troy. Years of siege and fighting ensued before the Greeks won the day with a cunning plan involving a giant wooden horse…

Troy was, in fact, conquered many times, was also destroyed by earthquakes, and was rebuilt throughout the millennia. Today, this ancient site does not offer as much to see as other magnificent sites, such as Ephesus and Aphrodisias, but for lovers of ancient history and legend, its uncovered ruins and city foundations are still impressive and are well presented.
